Art and Design

The Art Department is committed to providing all pupils with rich, diverse, and high-quality range of artistic experiences. Our curriculum is designed to be imaginative, innovative, and to foster enthusiasm for the subject while encouraging students to explore and engage with the world around them in meaningful ways. By celebrating the process over the outcome, we nurture a deeper appreciation for the arts and cultivate skills that extend beyond the RPPS Art Studio.

Our multidisciplinary approach ensures that students are given the opportunity to engage with a wide range of ideas and make connections between disciplines. This leads to the development of strong creative and critical thinking skills. Our well-researched and carefully planned projects enable us to achieve the key aims of the Art and Design programme.

We believe all students should have access to a wide range of artistic experiences that enable them to identify their strengths. Through our varied and dynamic curriculum, pupils work with a broad array of materials and processes, ranging from traditional art mediums to digital illustration, computer aided design and moving image. These experiences are designed to stimulate pupil’s imagination, offering visual, tactile, and sensory encounters that deepen their understanding of the world.

Our Art programme fosters an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts, introducing students to the work of artists, craftsmen, and designers from different periods, backgrounds, and cultures. We are committed to providing a fair and balanced representation, highlighting the contributions of diverse individuals across lines of race, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic background. Visits to galleries, partnerships with mentors from the creative industries, and links with art institutions further enrich this learning, helping students connect with art in real-world contexts.

Our approach to teaching Art and Design focuses on experimentation. Students are encouraged to take risks, explore new ideas, and use personal experiences to produce work that reflects their unique perspectives. By providing them with a solid foundation, we enable pupils to communicate their ideas, feelings, and meanings effectively through various media.

Alongside creative expression, we also foster critical thinking and aesthetic awareness. Students learn to make informed judgments about cultural products, developing the ability to analyse, critique, and respond to what they see. Through exposure to key art movements and periods in history, pupils gain a contextual understanding of how art has evolved and how contemporary practices are shaped by the past. This knowledge helps them engage with the discipline not only as creators but also as informed participants in the broader artistic dialogue.

One of the core tenets of our Art and Design programme is the belief that art has the power to shape society. We encourage students to explore the role of art and design as a tool for social change, helping them recognise how artists, designers, and makers have historically responded to and influenced the world around them. Through this lens, students are inspired to use their skills to make a positive impact, whether by addressing social issues, raising awareness, or expressing their views on contemporary challenges.

By engaging with Art and Design in this way, students learn that their voices matter and that their creativity can be a force for transformation. This empowerment is central to our mission, helping pupils develop the confidence to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences both verbally and through their work. The students are encouraged to actively reflect on our school community’s diverse cultural and social context.

Art and Design teaches valuable life skills that go far beyond technical proficiency. Through the creative process, students learn resilience, grit, and the importance of perseverance—qualities that underpin success in education and employment. They are encouraged to embrace challenges, learn from their mistakes, and continuously refine their work. This growth mindset fosters not only creative development but also a strong sense of personal responsibility and the development of strong collaboration skills.

We emphasise the importance of aesthetic refinement and high standards in presentation. We teach students to appreciate the power of visual literacy, helping them understand how presentation can elevate their message and impact. Through careful attention to detail, students learn to curate their work thoughtfully, ensuring that their final outcomes reflect both their creative vision and their technical abilities.

Our Art and Design programme aims to inspire confidence, value, and pleasure in self-expression. By fostering creativity, critical thinking, and resilience, we prepare our students not only to succeed in the creative industries but also to approach life with curiosity, innovation, and a sense of purpose.
