Challenge

At Ravenscourt Park Preparatory School, we provide high quality education with a focus on challenging all pupils. We ensure that lessons extend each pupil in their learning and that opportunities for challenge are provided across the wider curriculum. We have high expectations for the pupils and aim not only for academic challenge but to challenge pupils to become more independent learners.

At Ravenscourt Park Preparatory School, a significant part of our learning culture is to provide a high-quality education for all our pupils. We aim to provide a cognitively challenging environment within which pupils are encouraged to take risks and become resilient to failures, so that they can learn from these. We believe that this will greatly support an outstanding learning environment where an individuals’ potential can be reached.

We provide opportunities for pupils to access lessons built upon challenging objectives, receive feedback that challenges them further and provide opportunities to work at higher cognitive levels which allow pupils to problem solve, analyse, synthesise and evaluate. To challenge our pupils in their thinking, we use of open-ended higher order questions and activities.  We recognise the importance of providing access to enrichment materials to support and enhance their learning, including the opportunities to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular clubs. Our pupils are given opportunities to develop their metacognition skills across the curriculum to support their independence within the classroom.

At Ravenscourt Park School (RPPS), our curriculum is meticulously crafted to ensure that every pupil encounters systematic cognitive challenges. This approach fosters a rich learning environment where engagement is deep, meaningful, and rooted in evidence-based educational practices. Our teaching strategy places a strong emphasis on developing higher order thinking skills, encouraging independent thought, curiosity, and resilience in every pupil.

The classrooms at RPPS are designed to be both safe and stimulating environments that significantly enhance the learning experience of all pupils. Teachers carefully plan and deliver tasks that not only promote investigation but also encourage challenge and deeper learning. The displays within our classrooms are vibrant and informative, featuring challenging questions and inspiring facts. These displays also provide a dedicated space to celebrate the achievements of pupils across all subjects, highlighting the diverse talents within our school community.

The learning culture at RPPS is built around six core principles that shape our approach to education. We hold high expectations for all pupils, ensuring that they are consistently challenged to reach their full potential. Feedback is provided regularly and constructively, supporting pupils’ growth and development. We prioritize challenge in our lessons, encouraging pupils to push their boundaries and engage deeply with the material. Dialogue is a central component of our learning culture, with open and thoughtful discussions taking place in every lesson. We also promote a growth mindset, encouraging pupils to value effort, resilience, and the ability to learn from mistakes. Lastly, questioning is a key aspect of our learning culture, fostering an environment where inquiry is at the heart of learning.

At RPPS, we are dedicated to creating a positive and challenging environment for all pupils. Our approach to learning is underpinned by the belief that both hard work and ‘thinking hard’ are crucial to achieving excellence. Independent thinking is not only encouraged but is an essential part of our educational philosophy.

To ensure that pupils are adequately challenged, it is important that they feel secure in their learning environment. Pupils should feel confident enough to display their abilities and take risks within a supportive atmosphere. Teachers at RPPS are expected to strive for excellence in their pupils, not just competence. Pupils are encouraged to embrace challenges, even when the work is difficult, as these experiences provide opportunities for supported failure. Active engagement is key, with pupils participating in exciting discussions and debates that stimulate critical thinking.

We place great emphasis on developing pupils’ metacognitive strategies. Pupils are taught to plan, monitor, and review their learning, enabling them to become more independent learners. Pupils are set challenging targets to promote continuous improvement. We encourage pupils to ask challenging questions and ensure they receive thoughtful responses. Additionally, we emphasise that making mistakes is a valuable part of the learning process, and ‘having a go’ is crucial to their development.

The teaching staff at RPPS are fully committed to continuous improvement and the effective delivery of challenging content. Teachers are encouraged to regularly reflect on their own teaching practices to enhance their effectiveness. Through discussions, shared practices, and staff meetings, teachers develop a shared understanding of strategies that effectively challenge pupils in lessons. Professional development opportunities are regularly made available, with a particular focus on the concept of challenge in education. Teachers are also actively involved in learning walks and observations, which are designed to review and improve the quality of challenge provided in lessons.
