At Ravenscourt Park Preparatory School (RPPS), our Computing curriculum is designed to inspire and equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to navigate and shape the digital world. We focus on empowering students to become creators, not just consumers, of technology, fostering innovative thinking and problem-solving skills. Our vision is to “Empower students with basic knowledge and foster alternative thinking to transform them into creators rather than mere consumers of technology.”
Our Computing programme stands out for its dynamic approach, which adapts to the latest technological advancements and educational requirements. We ensure that students are not only proficient in using digital tools but also confident in exploring and innovating with technology. This is reflected in the enthusiasm and engagement of our students, who find joy and excitement in their Computing lessons.
Our school boasts a well-equipped computer suite with laptops and classrooms furnished with iPads. The use of iPads extends across various subjects, enhancing the learning experience throughout the school. Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) pupils have access to 10 shared devices, while Years One, Two, and Three each have access to 30 shared devices stored in centralised trolleys. In Years Four, Five, and Six, each student has access to their own device, facilitating a more personalised learning experience.
The philosophy of our Computing department is centred around creativity, critical thinking, and real-world application. We believe that every student should have the opportunity to develop digital skills that are essential for the future. Our curriculum is designed to cater to different learning styles and paces, ensuring that each child can thrive. We emphasise the importance of understanding the underlying principles of computing, not just the superficial use of technology.
Enrichment activities are a vital part of our Computing programme. We offer a range of extracurricular activities, such as coding clubs and theme week events, that provide students with additional opportunities to delve deeper into computing topics. These activities are designed to be fun and engaging, sparking students’ interest and enthusiasm for the subject. For instance, our ‘Skills for the Future’ week included various hands-on experiences and creative challenges that enhance students’ understanding and skills.
Computing at RPPS is not an isolated subject but is integrated with other areas of the curriculum. We incorporate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) projects that encourage students to apply their computing skills in interdisciplinary contexts. For example, Year Six students work in teams to solve real-world problems and present their solutions using digital tools. This approach helps students see the relevance of computing in everyday life and other academic disciplines.
Our curriculum leverages the latest technology to enhance learning. We provide opportunities for students to develop digital literacy skills and use technology for research, collaboration, and creativity. This prepares them for the demands of a technology-driven future. We also emphasise the importance of digital safety and responsible use of technology, ensuring students are well-prepared to navigate the digital world safely.
The integration of iPads across classrooms facilitates innovative teaching methods and enhances interactive learning. Students regularly use these devices to access educational apps, conduct research, and collaborate on projects. The ability to save work on tablets into their online portfolios via SharePoint or Seesaw supports efficient workflow and organisation, allowing for seamless access to their projects both at school and at home.
We are committed to ensuring that all students receive appropriate levels of challenge and support. Our curriculum includes tasks and projects of varying difficulty levels, catering to the diverse abilities of our students. We provide individualised support to help each student reach their full potential, whether through additional learning resources or advanced projects for those who are ready for more complex challenges.
The Computing programme at RPPS is designed to nurture inquisitive minds, develop critical thinking skills, and instil a lifelong passion for technology in every child. We are proud of our dynamic and engaging approach to computing education, which prepares our students for the future and inspires them to become innovative and responsible digital citizens. By focusing on these key areas, we aim to provide a comprehensive and enriching Computing education that equips our students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving digital world.
