Lower School English

At Ravenscourt Park Preparatory School (RPPS), our Lower School English curriculum is designed to ignite a passion for reading and writing from the very start of a child’s educational journey. We believe that a strong foundation in English equips students with essential literacy skills while fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning. Our child-centred approach recognises that every student is a unique learner, allowing them to develop at their own pace while exploring a wide range of texts and expressing themselves clearly.

We aim to provide a balanced and stimulating programme that caters to various learning styles, encouraging students to take ownership of their literacy development. Through a blend of structured lessons and creative activities, we inspire our students to become confident readers and articulate writers who engage with literature in meaningful ways.

In the Early Years, our primary focus is on building fundamental literacy skills. While phonics is an essential component of our early literacy programme, it is integrated seamlessly into a broader curriculum that prioritises reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and expressive writing. We introduce students to a variety of reading strategies, encouraging them to engage with texts on a deeper level and think critically about what they read.

As children progress through the Lower School, we gradually increase the complexity of reading materials and writing tasks, challenging them to develop their analytical and creative abilities. Regular assessments allow us to tailor instruction to each student’s needs, ensuring steady progress and a strong grasp of literacy skills.

At RPPS, we are dedicated to creating an inclusive learning environment where every child is encouraged and challenged to reach their full potential. Our curriculum is designed to provide stimulating opportunities for all children, provide appropriate levels of challenge for every student, ensuring that all children are engaged and motivated to reach their full potential. Our English curriculum incorporates differentiated tasks and activities that cater to varying abilities, from providing additional support to those who need it, to offering more complex texts and writing challenges for advanced learners. We employ “teach to the top” strategies that set high expectations, encouraging all students to stretch their thinking and deepen their understanding. This approach helps foster a culture of excellence, where every child is encouraged to strive for their best.

Incorporating technology into our English curriculum enhances the learning experience and equips students with essential digital literacy skills. From interactive whiteboards to iPads, technology is seamlessly integrated into our lessons, providing dynamic and engaging ways for children to interact with texts and develop their writing skills. Students use a variety of educational apps for tasks such as digital storytelling, vocabulary building, and collaborative projects. This integration not only supports traditional literacy skills but also prepares students for the demands of the modern, technology-driven world.

Enrichment activities are an integral part of our Lower School English programme, providing opportunities for children to deepen their engagement with literature and develop their communication skills. We host events such as World Book Day, author visits, book fairs and poetry competitions, which inspire students to explore their creativity and share their love of reading and writing with others.

Drama also plays a significant role in our curriculum, offering regular opportunities for students to perform and explore texts through role-play and theatre. These activities not only enhance their understanding of literature but also build confidence, teamwork, and public speaking skills.

At RPPS, fostering a love for reading is central to our English curriculum. Our classrooms and school library are stocked with a diverse selection of high-quality books designed to captivate young readers and expand their horizons. We encourage daily reading, both at school and at home, and provide numerous opportunities for children to explore different genres, authors, and themes. Initiatives such as reading challenges, themed days, and regular storytelling sessions help to cultivate a vibrant reading culture within our school community.

We recognise the vital role that parents play in their child’s literacy development, particularly the impact of hearing their children read regularly at home. To support this, we actively encourage parental involvement in our English programme. Through workshops, recommended reading lists, and regular communication, we provide parents with the tools and guidance they need to reinforce their child’s reading skills outside of the classroom. By fostering a strong partnership between home and school, we aim to ensure that every child receives consistent support and encouragement in their literacy journey, helping them to thrive both academically and personally.

The Lower School English curriculum at RPPS is designed to lay the foundation for a lifetime of learning and achievement. By fostering a love for reading, nurturing writing skills, and encouraging creative expression, we aim to equip our students with the confidence and competence they need to excel in their academic journey and beyond.

Upper School English

At Ravenscourt Park Preparatory School, our Upper School English department is committed to fostering a lifelong love of literature among students. Our vision is to immerse children in diverse texts and genres, encouraging them to think critically and creatively. We aim to equip students with the skills to communicate confidently and express themselves effectively through reading and writing. The impact of our programme is evident in the enthusiasm for reading throughout our school community, with students eagerly borrowing books and participating in enriching activities like book fairs and author visits.

Our school boasts a vibrant library, which serves as a hub for student engagement with literature. The increase in borrowed library books reflects a growing interest in reading. In recent years, classroom reading corners have been upgraded to feature age-appropriate, high-quality texts, encouraging students to explore a variety of genres. Our English curriculum is supported by resources like the Power of Reading scheme, providing a comprehensive framework that integrates high-quality literature into our lessons. This enables students to engage deeply with texts, enhancing both their reading and writing skills.

Our curriculum is designed to be diverse and engaging, utilising stimuli that spark interest and encourage learning. Weekly comprehension lessons focus on individual reading strategies, allowing students to develop critical reading skills. We emphasise a mix of speaking, listening and writing tasks to ensure a holistic approach to literacy. This strategy not only boosts reading and comprehension abilities but also encourages creativity, communication and analytical thinking. We actively involve parents in their children’s English education through resources like informative videos and workshops, strengthening the home-school connection.

To cultivate a lifelong passion for reading, we offer a range of enrichment activities. These include theme weeks, book fairs, author visits, reading challenges, and participation in local and national competitions. For instance, most recently, RPPS students have won prizes for their poetry at the 2024 Chiswick Book Festival. Drama activities are embedded through the Power of Reading scheme, allowing students to explore characters and texts in detail while enhancing their speaking and listening skills. Additionally, we hold an annual Debating Competition for Year Six students which fosters public speaking skills and critical thinking.

Our English curriculum aligns with the School Development Plan by promoting academic challenge, enhancing student wellbeing and integrating technology. We teach and reinforce positive behaviours and social-emotional skills through carefully selected texts. These stories illustrate concepts such as empathy, kindness, and resilience, providing opportunities for students to explore and discuss their feelings. By choosing diverse texts linked to current world themes, we enhance students’ emotional intelligence and help them develop a lifelong love of reading. This approach supports overall academic and personal development.

Technology is seamlessly integrated into our English curriculum to support teaching and learning. We use iPads and applications like Seesaw and Padlet to aid conceptual teaching. Other apps, such as Book Creator and Microsoft Forms, allow students to publish writing and receive instant feedback on spelling tests. Additionally, we have also introduced AI content creation apps which are used to support descriptive and creative writing, providing opportunities for students to explore settings and characterisation in detail.

We ensure appropriate levels of challenge and individualised support for all students through various strategies. From Year Four, streaming in English lessons allows us to group students by proficiency, tailoring instruction to meet diverse needs. We implement “teach to the top” strategies, setting high expectations and offering complex texts and writing tasks to advanced learners while providing scaffolding for others. Metacognition strategies help students become aware of their learning processes, fostering independence and effective learning. Targeted questioning engages students at the right level, encouraging critical and creative thinking. Through these approaches, we aim to foster a culture of excellence and encourage all students to reach their full potential.

Our Upper School English curriculum is dynamic, inclusive, and committed to developing students’ literacy skills and a love for literature. Through diverse activities, strategic integration of technology, and a focus on holistic development, we prepare students to succeed academically and personally.
