The Library

Reading for Pleasure is at the heart of the Library at RPPS, where every child from Reception to Year Six chooses and borrows books during timetabled Library lessons. The Library is open at break and lunchtime, when pupils from Year Two and up can also borrow, with direct access from the playground. Pupils enjoy exploring the catalogue on their very own child-friendly interface, with guidance from our award-winning Librarian Mrs Griffiths.

Our school Library is a colourful and welcoming facility, boasting vibrant and informative displays, with cosy corners to sit and enjoy their favourite books. It is well-stocked with nearly 7,000 high quality texts and the collection is constantly growing. Pupils are encouraged to request books, with plenty of book chat between pupils and Mrs Griffiths. The collection is representative of our school community and wider world, and celebrates Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at its heart. The Library was remarked upon by a well-respected retired ex-Headmaster of four top West London schools as “truly a wonderful example of diversity and inclusion in practice”

ISI commented on the library as follows:

3.7 “Throughout the school, a love and appreciation of reading is actively promoted through the well-stocked library.”

3.20 “Pupils demonstrate a deep awareness of, and tolerance for, people from different backgrounds, within their own school and wider society. This can be attributed to the high priority the school’s leadership places on promoting inclusivity. A display in the library on Black Lives Matter is prominent and well understood, reinforcing messages of sensitivity and respect for diversity.”

Pupils and staff across RPPS celebrate World Book Day and our special Theme Weeks together by getting dressed up as their favourite characters from books (recycled costumes are encouraged) or getting involved the Theme such as inviting our families in to showcase their culture during International Week.

Mrs Griffiths hosts multiple author and illustrator visits throughout the year for all year groups. We have been delighted to welcome, amongst others, Eoin Colfer, Louie Stowell, Ken Wilson-Max, Steve Antony, Sharna Jackson, Clare Balding, Steve Antony, Cath Howe, Tom Palmer, Konnie Huq, Dhonielle Clayton, Patrick Kane, Sophy Henn, Peter Bentley, Michelle Harrison, John Bond and Sibéal Pounder, with many exciting guests booked for the year ahead. These visits are truly inspirational and continue to enhance our pupils love of reading and drawing.

Primary School Librarian of the Year

Mrs Griffiths is the School Library Association’s 2022 Primary School Librarian of the Year and recipient of the CILIP 125 medal. The SLA judges noted the constant stream of pupils wanting to borrow books, and because Mrs Griffiths prides herself on getting to know every child individually, she can always recommend a book they will love. Mrs Griffiths works closely with all members of staff and incorporates their teaching into her story-time, either through the choice of books or through what she chooses to highlight. Mrs Griffiths runs a Year 6 Library Prefect team and gets involved in all school open days. Mrs Griffiths is highly involved in the world of children’s publishing by being a columnist and reviewer for The School Librarian magazine; judge for the School Library Association’s Information Book Award; active member of CILIP’s YLG London Committee; volunteers at Chiswick Book Festival as the Children’s Co-Ordinator; and supports the Children’s Book Project charity.

The Library is at the heart of learning at RPPS.
