Pastoral
Care

The Personal, Social and Emotional Development of our children is the cornerstone of our holistic education. Right from the start, we teach our children to cooperate and share, and to manage their feelings and behaviour through taking responsibility for their own choices and behaviour. We place high emphasis upon kindness, courtesy, respect and tolerance, and these values are embedded inside and outside of the classroom.

Responsibility and Collaboration

Children take on positions of responsibility such as membership of the School Council, or as Charity Champions, and our Year Two Playground Monitors take their roles very seriously, looking out for any children who might be looking a little lonely or upset, and finding others for them to play with. By the time our pupils reach Year Six, they are confident without being arrogant, eloquent and emotionally intelligent, and they are ready to make the most of the new opportunities that will be on offer to them at their Senior Schools.

Merit Assemblies held each week award accolades including Sports Star, French Speaker, Musician and Star of the Week, alongside a special Commendation Assembly each term to honour those children who have displayed excellence, effort, achievement, attitude or contribution. High expectations of learning behaviour, combined with caring pastoral guidance, empower our confident learners to achieve excellent results.

The behaviour we encourage and expect from our children at RPPS is based on a whole-school ethos of respect and tolerance. All children subscribe to the RPPS Code of Conduct which emphasises the importance of good manners and treating others with kindness, thus guaranteeing a calm and learning-focused environment which is key to all successful learning journeys.

All members of staff at RPPS place the utmost importance upon Pastoral Care. The Class Teachers ensure that they monitor the progress, development and well-being of each child under their care so that each pupil feels they can discuss any issues they might have with someone who knows them well. The Heads of Lower and Upper School lead the Pastoral Care for their respective sections, and this is overseen by the Deputy Head.

Homework

Homework is intended to reinforce key skills and recently acquired subject knowledge. The acquisition of independent study skills is vital to preparing children for the demands of secondary education and a dedication to life-long learning.

By gradually increasing the amount of set homework through each year group, we aim to ensure a smooth progression in study skills whilst still allowing children to explore extra-curricular learning opportunities beyond the school gates.

Healthy Meals

Our dedicated in-house catering team provide freshly prepared meals which are varied, nutritious, well balanced and above all delicious. School menus rotate on a weekly basis and combine seasonal, fresh ingredients to produce healthy lunches.

Sharon Andrews has been The Gardener Schools Group Catering Manager since it was founded. She has qualifications in Nutrition and manages the catering for all school events ranging from parent/staff BBQ events to Canapé Receptions.

All of our schools have a 5 star Food Standard’s Agency Rating which is the highest possible level.

While at lunch time, a delicious hot meal and dessert is served to the children at their tables, allowing them to fully enjoy the lunch time experience without having to queue.

Local Suppliers

We are proud that the majority of our food is sourced locally, including meat, fish, vegetables and dairy products which come from independent, local traders.

Dietary Requirements

Every endeavour is made to ensure that individuals with special dietary requirements are met, just as they would be at home. Wherever possible we try not to change the menus for pupils with special dietary requirements but simply to adapt the weekly menu to meet their needs.

Allergies

We are a nut free school. We have a number of children with a range of food allergies and this is one of the main reasons we do not allow children to bring in a packed lunch or any snacks from home. Our catering staff are alerted to food allergies at the start of every academic year and advise children about the contents of the meals being provided.

What is for lunch this week?

Menus are provided on the parents’ portal, allowing parents to discuss food choices with their child, guiding them towards foods which they might enjoy.

The school is located next door to Ravenscourt Park. This large green space provides plenty of opportunities for our school. From summer sports to nature lessons.

The children also love exploring the park and discovering nature. Outdoor learning is essential as it gives children first-hand experience of the world and a chance to become immersed in their environment. This is an opportunity that cannot be replicated in the classroom.

Learning Support and SEND

Every child is unique and the Learning Support department at RPPS aims to identify all pupils who may need special consideration to support their physical, sensory, emotional or cognitive development at the earliest opportunity. Home, and school, work in tandem to find positive strategies and solutions in order for each child to achieve their full potential, both academically and socially. This can be facilitated in a number of ways:

  • Identifying and assessing individual needs through staff and parent feedback, formal assessment, screening and observation.
  • Designing and implementing individual learning programmes, including Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Supporting teachers to develop classroom strategies and multi-sensory teaching strategies to promote personalised learning.
  • Liaising with external agencies e.g. speech and language therapists, occupational therapists.

We ensure that the solutions identified are coordinated.
