Lower School & Upper School

Lower School (Reception to Year 2):

EYFS (Early Years & Foundation Stage)

Reception, our starting year, focuses upon fostering positive relationships while developing self-confidence through experiential learning. Purposeful play, under the expert guidance of our Early Years Educators, enables our youngest learners to develop a strong foundation and to make excellent progress at the beginning of their learning journey at RPPS. Our Early Years team provide children with a wide range of hands-on learning opportunities inside the classroom, in our Outdoor Learning Zone and during our local park visits. Our interactive and enabling Reception environment facilitates development of the following 'Prime' and 'Specific' areas of learning:

Prime Areas

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Encompassing the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, the Lower School caters for children aged 4 to 7 through individualised and nurturing provision. Teaching and learning gradually becomes more formalised to incorporate the teaching of discrete subject areas in Years 1 and 2. With an emphasis on excellence and enjoyment, our broad and creative curriculum excites children in the Lower School, who are taught predominately by their Class Teacher and Teaching Assistant. They will also benefit greatly from our specialist provision in Art, Computing, French, PE and Music, on a weekly basis.

Upper School (Year 3 to Year 6)

The Upper School at RPPS encompasses children aged 7 through to 11 in Key Stage 2. Split across the Parkside and Gardener Building, teaching in the Upper School reflects the structured learning requirements of 11+ exam preparation. Children remain in mixed-ability classes but are set for the core subjects of Maths and English, where they are also taught by subject specialists.
